Dad’s voice came from the kitchen followed by Mom’s, so I headed that way.

Dad sat at the table eating a sandwich and chips. He took a swig of iced tea. “Hey, Peanut. How was school?”

I kissed his cheek. “It was okay. You know, just gearing up for finals.”

I hugged Mom. Then asked dad, “What are you doing home?”

He wiped his mouth with a napkin. “Late lunch. We’ve been busy today.” He popped a potato chip in his mouth.

“Any news on Tiffany?” I asked.

“Charlie, sweetheart, let your father eat in peace before you interrogate him.” Mom gave me a smile and rubbed my back. “You want a snack?”

I smiled sheepishly at my dad. “Sorry.” Then said to Mom, “Not really hungry. I’ll just get some juice.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’m almost finished.” He took another drink of tea.

I took the food containers from my bag and put them in the dishwasher. While I moved things around in the fridge to get to the tomato juice, Dad spoke. “Tiffany woke up just after noon.”

Mom handed me a glass, and I began pouring the tomato-y goodness, stopping as his words sank in. I whipped around to face him. “Really? Who hit her? What did she say?”

He put his hand up to stop me from throwing questions at him. “Pour me some of that juice and I’ll tell you.” Tomato juice was our favorite. No one but the two of us liked it.

I finished pouring the juice and handed him the glass. Mom put another on the counter and I poured some for me. “Do you want anything,” I asked her.

“No thanks, sweetie.” She brushed a kiss to my forehead and we joined Dad at the table.

Dad finished his sandwich. “Unfortunately, she didn’t see who hit her. She said she walked into the office and someone came from behind the door and hit the back of her head. She doesn’t remember anything else.”

I sat back in my chair deflated. I had hoped she’d be able to point the finger at someone other than Danu. Then a thought struck me and I sat back up.

“What about security cameras? There wasn’t anything on video?”

Dad drained his tomato juice and wiped his mouth. “Systems were down. There was some kind of malfunction last week and they hadn’t gotten them working before the incident. Bad timing.”

Dad got up and kissed my forehead. Mom rose to give him a hug and kiss. “Be careful tonight.”

“You’re working tonight?” Dee had managed to come into the house without us hearing and stood in the doorway. My sister could be sneaky.

“Been some pranksters causing mischief lately. It’s probably kids just blowing off end-of-school-year steam, but we need to stop it before anyone goes too far.”

I gave him a hug. “Be careful. Love you.”

“Love y’all, too.” He hugged Deanna and kissed her forehead before leaving.

We all stood there for a few moments without speaking. We all hated when Dad had to work at night.

Mom gave my sister a hug. “Are you hungry?”

“I could eat.
